Getting Started

So you’re getting started renovating your home but don’t know where to begin. If you’re doing it to stay in your home longer, you’re going about things differently than if you are renovating to sell. Asses your reasons, costs, and needs to handle the renovations before you get started.

Hire someone to assess your house. Have him look into the attic, basement, everywhere so you can get a rough idea of the things that need fixing, whether you’re selling or staying. You also need to check into the systems of your house, such as plumbing, electrical, ect. Making sure all of these things are operational is vital when doing home renovation. Ignoring these things could have drastic results later on down the road. Check on windows, doors, and skylights to make sure they’re all in good condition; making sure they don’t need to be replaced. Finally, look into the costs of the home. If your plumbing and electricity seem high, there’s a chance that your home needs a new system in place.

Starting off is one of the most important aspects of home renovation. Not having a solid plan can make the foundation of things fall out from under you. (Literally!)
